Matthew 7:22-29. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; but it did not fall.

I was once fired from a job for which I really wasn’t suited, something I considered “tragic” at the time. Ultimately, though, that loss allowed me to explore other jobs more suitable to my true self.
Defining myself through a job and a lifestyle resulted in a life built on sand. When that shaky foundation was swept away, I was freed to build my life on God. Often I have been so absorbed in my current life that I could envision no other life. So only when familiar ways are closed can I begin to see new ways. Many would call that mere hindsight, but I consider it a vision of redemption.

Building on God gives me stability I could not have known if I hadn’t endured that “tragic” loss. Rain washed away the shaky foundation; now I have a life built on the rock of God. And that house does not fall.
