What is a chakra?

Our chakras are energy centers in our bodies. These energy centers are constantly receiving energy from our surroundings and environment. Chakra is a spinning vortex of energy. It comes from a Sanskrit (ancient language) word that means wheel or disk like.

The chakras send and receive energy of everything that has ever happened to us.

The size of your chakras are about the size of your fist. When balanced, these energy centers should be spinning clockwise. Whenever our chakras are balanced, we maintain optimal health and well-being. Our health is affected on all levels, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Problems such as illness and disease may result from chakras not being balanced. There are exercises and meditations that can help and having energy work can be very beneficial in creating and maintaining this balance.

Although there are many chakras throughout our bodies and layers of our energy fields, there are 7 major chakras, which correlate to the colors of the rainbow.

First chakra(red) – root chakra and has to do with survival, our foundation, being grounded. It relates to insecurities, bladder and nervous disorders, sexual dysfunctions and skin problems.

Second chakra(orange) – sacral chakra located below the navel. This chakra relates to pleasure, relationships, appetite and our creativity. Examples of dysfunctions would be colitis, PMS, kidney problems ovarian/uterine disorders, emotional issues.

Third chakra(yellow) – solar plexus. This chakra is the seat of the ego. Digestive and weight disorders would be a dysfunction, as well as power issues, gallbladder, fear and self-esteem problems.

Fourth chakra(green) – heart center, is about giving and receiving love, compassion. Dysfunctions would include blood pressure, heart and lung problems, asthma and sleep disorders.

Fifth chakra(blue) – throat center, governs all aspects of communication. It is the will to express, whether written or oral communication. Problems in this chakra may include the thyroid, jaw, tonsils, or an inability to express oneself.

Sixth chakra(indigo) – brow center, is also known as the “third eye”, our inner vision. An unbalanced brow chakra may show up as eyesight problems, headaches in the brow, glandular or endocrine issues or hormonal imbalances.

Seventh chakra,(violet to white) located at the crown or top of the head is about our purpose in life. Major depression, problems relating to the pineal gland, learning disorders, headaches and light-headedness are associated with imbalances within the crown chakra.
